Our first NHS FBLA Chapter Community Service Project for the 2010 - 2011 year was  to connect with the NHS DECA Chapter and implement a Can Food Drive for a local Food Distribution organization.  Cans of food were donated by students and teachers who competed for a free Coffee & Doughnut Party which was paid for by the FBLA and DECA Chapters.  In addiition to classrooms collecting cans of food, FBLA and DECA members collected cans of food from local Kroger customers as they entered and departed from the store.  Mr. Smith, the NHS Band Director, and his students collected the highest total of cans.  They reported back to us that the coffee and doughnuts were delicious

Georgia FBLA Fall Motivational Rally

 * * * * * * * * * *

On Thursday, October 14th, 2010, the NHS FBLA Chapter members and students who were interested in joining FBLA, loaded up on school busses to attend the Georgia Future Business Leaders of America Fall Motivational Rally at the Georgia State Fair in Perry, Georgia.  The rally is held at the begnning of every year for FBLA members, as well as students interested in becoming members, to have an opportunity to learn what Georgia FBLA is and does throughout the year.  Over 7000 students and their advisors from all across Georgia come together to celebrate, learn, and socialize about business and leadership skills.  The State Officers are introduced and they explain State Events and State Projects to be conducted during the year.  A special guest shares his life experiences on how to be a successful student, productive member of society, and successful business leader.  The afternoon was spent having fun, fun, fun!  Students were able to enjoy the activities of the Georgia State Fair including rides, games, arcades and food.  Cotton candy, turkey legs, corn dogs, ice cream, and fried snicker bars were just a sampling of the foods offered.  Upon arriving home, students stepped off the bus in a worn out daze but with broad smiles on their faces.  I do believe they enjoyed and received plenty of motivation to get them through the year.  It was terrific to see their motivation; after all that was the point of attending the rally!

Porterdale Career Day

 * * * * * * * * * *

NHS FBLA Chapter members were given a terrific opportunity to demonstate their passion for a future career by volunteering to demonstate, teach and present their career choice to students attending Porterdale Elementary School at the Porterdale Career Day.  Community organizations, businesses, and public services volunteered their times and efforts to demonstrate a variety of career field opportunities to the elementary students.  FBLA members presented on accounting, hospitality, nursing, administrative, and business careers.  Chapter members enjoyed the day's activities as much as the Porterdale student's enjoyed theirs.  Fun was had by all and the Porterdale staff was thrilled to have our NHS FBLA Chapter members participate in such a worthy community service.

     Seize The Day

 * * * * * * * * * *

On Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 the Newton High School Future Business Leaders of America officers attended a once in a lifetime opportunity “Seize the Day” motivational seminar at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Quoted directly from the Seize the Day website the event offered our students empowerment and encouragement.

“Seize the Day! events have been created to bring together people from all walks of life for one thrilling day of inspiration, rejuvenation, education and motivation. It does not matter where you come from, whether you attend this seminar as a CEO or a homemaker, as a business owner or an employee, as a student or an educator. What does matter is that you seize this opportunity to explore options for possibly improving every major area of your life and your career.

Seize the Day! seminars feature America’s foremost success experts in career, finance, health, fitness, time management and personal development. These outstanding leaders, thinkers and visionaries will share their amazing life stories – their secrets, strategies and game plans for success – all designed to challenge, humor, confront, enlighten and empower you.

This may be just what you’re looking for to ignite that inner passion in yourself and others, energizing you to sharpen your business skills, accelerate your goals, grow your income, solve major problems, or at the very least, dare to dream.

These seminars can initiate that first step toward powerful change. While any transformation that occurs will take place within the individual, there is no denying the power of the ripple effect, starting with an inner change in mind, heart and attitude… and potentially extending beyond to improved job performances, better workplaces, happier marriages, healthier families and stronger communities”

NHS FBLA officers were empowered and encouraged with the personal stories of Terry Bradshaw, Laura Bush, Sarah Palin, Ben Stein, Bill O’Reilly, Tom Hopkins, John Maxwell, Phil Town, Les Brown, and John Smoltz.  The students enjoyed listening to the speakers and realized that the opportunity to reach our dreams lies within each of us.

                     Thanksgiving Can Food Drive

 * * * * * * * * * *

The NHS FBLA Chapter sponsored a school wide Can Food Drive from November 8th, 2010 through November 19th, 2010.  Students and teachers were motivated by four opportunities to win $50.00 cash to be used for a “Block Party”.   The NHS FBLA Chapter teamed up with the local Georgia Army National Guard Recruiting Office to provide the $200 cash incentive.  Teachers who collected the most cans from all their blocks were declared winners and had the option of throwing a “Block Party” for all their blocks or just the one block that donated the most cans for that teacher.

Our school wide can collection goal was 1000 cans.  On the next to last day we were struggling to meet the goal with only 450 cans collected.  The final day demonstrated the great character and pride of every student and faculty member of Newton High School. We not only met our goal of 1000 cans, but surpassed the goal by another 1000 cans for a total collection of over 2000 cans!

The 2000 cans of food were donated to Solid Rock Willing Helpers food pantry located behind Solid Rock Baptist Church off of Brown Bridge Road on November 23rd, 2010.  The gift of care was just in time to provide many individuals a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving!

Georgia FBLA State Leadership Conference

* * * * * * * * * *

Six NHS FBLA Chapter members, along with two NHS FBLA advisors, attended the Georgia FBLA State Leadership Conference on March 18th and 19th held in Atlanta at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.  The members attending were; Kareena Small, Kiara Lee, Laura Harris, Chrishandra Perkins, Bradford Porter, and Chase Dial.  Advisors were Mr. O and Ms. Brown.  The two days provided ample opportunities for students to compete in events and to attend a variety of Leadership Sessions.  Leadership Sessions included titles such as "Rock the SAT", "Social Networks", "Networking in the Mordern World", "Awaken the Leader in You", as well as 50 other pertinent titles to help students become Future Business Leaders of America.  On Saturday night, after competitions were completed, we attended the "Awards of Excellence" program to celebrate with the winners!  Although, NHS did not win any awards we had fun cheering on the many students from Eastside High School who did win, including three students who won the opportunity to attend the FBLA National Leadership Conference to be held in Orlando, Florida this summer.  We didn't have much free time but we took a few hours on Saturday afternoon to ride MARTA to Lenox Mall where we all had fun shopping and dining.  Four of our students had never had the experience of riding the subway and seemed thrilled to have had the experience.  We're looking forward to next year and hoping to send NHS FBLA members to the National Leadership Conference!  Make your plans now to join and participate in the 2011 - 2012 NHS FBLA Chapter!
